Cross-border tax, handled by a CPA licensed on both sides

Canadians with U.S. income, Americans living in Canada, and NRIs face filing obligations in two countries at once. We prepare both sets of returns, apply the Canada–U.S. treaty, and make sure the two filings agree with each other.

Canadian Snowbirds

Two countries, one filing position

Canadians who spend extended periods in the United States can be treated as U.S. residents under the substantial presence test, even without a green card. We calculate your day count, determine whether the closer connection exception or the Canada–U.S. treaty tie-breaker applies, prepare Form 8840 or Form 1040-NR as required, and make sure your Canadian return is consistent with the position taken in the U.S.

US Tax Filing and Preparation

We prepare U.S. federal and state returns for employment income, investment income, rental property and green card holders, and we coordinate them with your Canadian filing so that foreign tax credits are claimed in the right country in the right year. Returns are prepared and reviewed by a CPA licensed in the United States.

Reporting of income, losses and distributions at both the corporate and shareholder level, including Form 1120-F for foreign corporations carrying on U.S. business and Schedule K-1 for partners and S corporation shareholders. We identify the deductions and treaty positions your structure supports and file both sides consistently.

Sale of Real Estate (FIRPTA)

Sell U.S. property with the withholding handled

When a non-U.S. person sells U.S. real property, the buyer must generally withhold a percentage of the gross sale price under FIRPTA — often far more than the actual tax on the gain. We apply for a withholding certificate on Form 8288-B where you qualify, and prepare the U.S. return that reconciles the withholding to the tax actually owed so any excess can be refunded.
